Latest gpg4win-3.0.0 does not show nor create Gp4Win start menu, no doc available after install (Win7-64)
Open, WishlistPublic

Description

Hello,
I had gpg4win-2.3.4 installed, all menus available in the Start Menu, after installing gpg4win-3.0.0 there is no Gp4Win in the Start Menu, no doc.
At installation time the installer does not propose the options for the Start Menu and doc.

I had to downgrade to gpg4win-2.3.4 in order to get all the features in the Start Menu.

OS: Win7-64 bit, US

Any clue?

Andrew

What menus did you miss? Do you mean the right-click menus or kleopatra/gpa in the start menu?

You can add them by yourself by right clicking the executable and add them by hand. Sometimes it takes some time for them to appear at your installed applications. How long did you wait?

Hello,

What I mean is that the installer does not install the documentation (I even de-compressed the installer "gpg4win-3.0.0.exe" with 7-zip: PDF doc archives are present in this version but links to the PDF files are not installed) nor the menu in the "Start Menu" (see below the Menu correctly installed by "gpg4win-2.3.4.exe" but not available at install time and by the way not installed in the Menu drop list (OS: WIN7 64-bit, US).

The most problematic is that the menu "Gp4Win" and sub-menus are not installed by "gpg4win-3.0.0.exe" but is installed by previous versions (see part of print screen below)....

I can do it by hand of course but it seems that something simple is missing in the installer script ("gpg4win-3.0.0.exe").

It should be easy to fix if the missing informations are added to the NullSoft installer.

Anyway, Gpg4Win is an excellent package (I made an anonymous donation via PayPal).

Many thanks for your attention and best regards,

André

Installed correctly by "gpg4win-2.3.4.exe", but nothing by "gpg4win-3.0.0.exe", had to downgrade to gpg4win-2.3.4

The gpg4win 3.0 installer does not have the option to install documentation, therefore the docs are missing on purpose. This is done to lower the footprint of the installer, but they are of coursestill available via the homepage.

I set up a Windows 7 System to test if Kleopatra (and or GPA) appears in the Start Menu. And it does indeed. I don't understand what you are missing.

Hello Jochen,

I tried again after a clean uninstall of gpg4win-2.3.4 and clean install of gpg4win-3.0.0: exactly the same symptom (Kleoptra is present but not the others menus), see print screen here below (gpg4win-2.3.4-install-menu & gpg4win-3.0.0-install-menu), gpg4win-3.0.0-install-menu does not propose what gpg4win-2.3.4-install-menu proposes and by the way does not create the links.

Strange... I even disabled all the protections in my notebook which is one of the most powerful available on the market: MSI GT72, 34GB RAM, Nvidia M980 8GB, 512 RAID SSD, 1 TB HD, CPU Type Mobile QuadCore Intel Core i7-4980HQ, 3800 MHz (38 x 100).

I do not understand this issue, will wait for the next release.

Many thanks again & best regards,

André

Hello all together,

I have exactly the same problem as Andrew.
I'm using a configuration file for the automatic installation as described in Annex C of the compendium. There is a setting

inst_start_menu_folder = gpg4win

All entries for the software in the start menu (such as gpa, kleopatra) should be below this menu.
However, the submenu was not created. Gpa and Kleopatra are on top of the start menu. That's not what we want.

Best regards,
Jens

Hi,

The Documentation is installed. You can find it under Help -> Gpg4win Compendium in Kleopatras menu.

We intentionally remved the Gpg4win Folder in the start menu and just have a Kleopatra and / or GPA Shortcut in the top level Start Menu folder.
This is in line with modern Windows practices ( Windows 8 and later ) where Software is treated and displayed more and more like an "App".

Similarly the documentation is no longer linked prominently from the start menu because manuals and handbooks are no longer common today. The help is available but our goal is that you won't need to read a Handbook before you can start working with Kleopatra.

But: I could live with respecting the inst_start_menu_folder in an installer.ini again to overwrite that default and create a subfolder again. Thus I'm changing this to an open wish.

Best Regards,
Andre
