It appears the manpage (https://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manpage.html) suffers
from auto-correct-itis. In all places where the parameter should have a double
hyphen ("--"), the page instead shows an en-dash ("—", HTML entity –). This
is a common auto-correct on the Mac (and possibly some other platforms), and needs
to be reverted to the proper double hyphen, as readers (including one of my
coworkers) may erroneously interpret the en-dash as a single hyphen.
