The reason that they are not shown by default is that the
key listing might become too confusing if you have a short
key roll-over period (i.e. dozens of expired subkeys)

Uhm, didn't think about that case (I thought expiring (sub)keys were the
exception, not the norm). Thanks for clarifying.
