Revert "Return E_FAIL when cancelling write event"

This reverts commit 503ee571f09281b0e05d0f7e99554e195995a47e.

Further testing has shown that this made the issue worse
as the return value was ignored on failure. The initial
test was modified by other addins which were active
at the same time.
