Need to do this for the docker image and this way document how to do that with update alternatives. For our build setup it made most sense to manually link it only for the Gpg4win build user and not a system wide change.

No problem ;) Sorry for my snarky reply. Hope it worked for you now.
Noticed this issue was still open. This was resolved.
OK, I'm sorry, please accept my apologies for not having read the dialog message carefully enough. It seems I ignore the second sentence, replacing it with the omnipresent "Do you want to continue?" in my mind. Maybe the excuse is that it was terribly hot and damp in my office, preventing me from thinking.

😂 Skandal! Ein BUG!: "Möchten Sie die Installation ohne Administrator-Rechte fortfahren?" und Sie sagen "Nein". Ja dann brechen wir ab weil sie eben *nicht* fortfahren wollen.
This could have something to do with our changes to g4wihelp.c to adapt to the new plugin API.
You can install Gpg4win without admin rights. It requests "Highest available" rights by default to be installed into the protected Program Files (x86) folder. When you are not in the Administrators group It will install into your home directory much like firefox does. Any maybe if you don't want to leave a footprint installing Gpg4win on the System (without admin rights) where you don't have admin rights is kind of beside the point. You either leave a footprint by the installation or you could just use the installed Gpg4win there.

I added my script to find icons, used in our packaging file. It is extremely stupid as it just greps the source for each icon and takes quite a while but it works for me and I can simply run it in the background. This was just a hacky "worksforme" solution, and we probably want to do it differently. Using a single expression for all the icons would already be a large improvement but I just did not care about that. It also does not really generate the -inst files and requires manual work. But since we probably will do it differently in the future anyway I just commited what I have right now. It does not take care of icon removals and so on. So we might need something with a bit more development put into it.

I have the website repo now filtered and ready to be pushed but the write access to repos only hosted on phabricator does not work. We probably need repos on playfair.gnupg.org and only then mirror them here. Since werner is currently busy and I need him for that I will do that tomorrow or wednesday. As tomorrow I am on the road.
I have created the repo now. https://dev.gnupg.org/source/gpg4win-compendium/
That was not me. I would much prefer to have the website in its own repo with its own contributors and so on. Maybe we could also do this then.
I am not sure what autoconf -o does though?
Ok cool, I think then you can mostly use git-filter-repo to filter out the history of the manual subfolder into a new git empty repo. Just give the word and I can create one here on dev.gnupg.org where you can then push to.
I am not sure what autoconf -o does though? How are the replacements handled which were defined in confiugure.ac etc?
What I tried so far (after checking out de40f2fe3336c63e5f73cce93402a73029779fd3, the commit before you removed the compendium):
I am reopening this at least for testing as we have reports that another client is facing the issue with recent versions and also with verified mails .
Aug 4 2023
I spent my afternoon with git-filter-repo and while that worked nicely I failed to come up with a new build system for the compendium that worked, I tried to do the full autotools shebang but in the evening I realized that a simple static Makefile would probably be better like with the website branch. But I leave that to someone else. I will now tag gpg4win-4.2.0 as "the-last-compendium" and include the pdfs from that version from now on and just remove the compendium from master.

Oh wait. That shows a Problem in our side. We should include the full chain in our signature. I am renaming your task and will at least investigate if we do or if that maybe changed the last time we updated the certificate. Which might have been after 4.0.3
OK, had to install the intermediary CA certificate from https://support.globalsign.com/ca-certificates/intermediate-certificates/code-signing-standard-ev-intermediate-certificates . For some reason it was missing from my system.
After installing things look good.

Other options would be
- to display a warning if there are inline images in the email.
- an option not to automatically sign emails if they contain an inline image.

Thanks for the suggested workaround, I am going to try that. And thanks for pointing out this could be related to something like a Yubikey attached. Having the same symptoms as those described in T4581 and here.
I have this regularly. Sometimes waiting helps and it loads after several minutes, sometimes shutting down Kleopatra is the only remedy (because after an hour and more it feels like it ended up in an infinite loop).

Please note that my test was not on an USB Device. I will keep this issue with your analysis and reopen a different one with my error and details on how to reproduce that one. Pretty sure it was disk full.
I don't think this is a regression or something we can do anything about. Note that we see the same thing also on the command line. Actually I have seen the very same thing pretty often with USB devices. Thus lowering priority.

Gpg4win doesn't include libexpat anymore (since it doesn't include gpa and pinentry-gtk anymore).
May 15 2023
With the recent commit the old workaround works reliably again.
May 9 2023
works, no KIO error. Gpg4win-4.1.1-beta317
May 3 2023
Starting to understand KIO architecture a bit better. We can easily add more protocols if we want to. For now I have just added the file plugin. I tested with moving.
Apr 28 2023
The code for the file Job etc. is definetly in there. I think it somehow tries to intospect supported protocols maybe even through dbus and this fails then. My current expectation is that we need to identify where this happens and then to hardcode some supported jobs / workers etc.
Yes most definetly I am looking it at next
Setting priority to high because this should be fixed before the next release.

As far as I understand the problem, all content-ids are lost during processing of an email.
This process happens during the signing/encryption of an email.

Problem 2 comes from the fact, that gpg4win packages gpg 2.4.0, but the new archive code needs gpg 2.4.1.

Hello All,
Mar 14 2023
I checked it: There was an empty bin/gpgconf.ctl, and there still is.
Trying it again today, I still get error messages most notably about failed self-tests, but surprisingly the window is no longer empty.
Instead it seems to take an eternity (minutes, actually still not finished after three minutes) until the certificate cache is loaded.
Maybe the problem is the "Check Point Endpoint Security" being active on the client. It looks as if it prevents use of Kleopatra.
As I don't have administrator rights ("for security reasons"), I cannot analyze what's actually going on.
Mar 13 2023
Seeing that there are "groups" in Kleopatra, I read the docs, and they suggested that the groups are for addressing multiple recipients.
Settings -> Configure Groups.
It seems that you are missing the step "Create a new file called gpgconf.ctl in the folder Gpg4win_Portable/bin."

I am closing this as a duplicate of T6117 even though it is not really a duplicate. But for me it does not make sense to keep this as a different issue because simplifying the dialog is directly related to making it more accessible.

The timestamp problem may be fixed by moving the line
File ${prefix}/share/icons/breeze/icon-theme.cache
(and any other lines installing an icon-theme.cache) at the end of inst-breeze-icons.nsi (or the corresponding inst-*.nsi file).
I just learned that
Qt will make use of GTK's icon-theme.cache if present to speed up the lookup.
So on Linux, this looks quite differently.

I am pretty sure that this was related to issues we found when analyzing another crash / hang with Kleopatra. In T5478 we are currently reworking how we handle archives completely. This will fix this issue, too.
Jan 11 2023
Some timings, timed with procmon and not by decorating the calls in the code. Just looking at was process does.
Putting up for grabs and removing Kleopatra tag since for Kleopatra users this has been fixed (unless they manage to trigger multiple separate concurrent imports in Kleopatra).
Jan 10 2023
I do not think that this is an issue after analyzing procmon timings. It is only an installation time issue. For that there is no real reason to spend much effort on this.
Note to self after spending some time searching again for the documentation I saw previously about this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/shell/context-menu-handlers#suppressing-verbs-and-controlling-visibility

As you might have seen from the commits mkportable has been removed from Gpg4win.

@ikloecker You are right, I only thought of public key import. Then lets serialize this. Might even make for a nicer Progressbar if we count the outstanding files.

For testing I have created a Gpg4win installer and only selected minimal installation and gpgme-json was there. Both in /bin and /bin_64.
Dec 21 2022
I really don't want to bypass gpgme and then parse the import results and all other status output of gpgsm ourselves. I'll go for Andre's suggestion and serialize imports of multiple files.
I meant bypass the gpgme engine and call gpgsm directly. Maybe using gpgme's spawn engine. But I am not sure whether this is really a good idea. If we can find a way to pass multiple filenames to gpgsm --server that would be better. But requires updates to gpgsm.
Only just noticed that this was added incompletely, it was added to the build system but not linked in.
@werner Do I understand correctly that by "It might be easier to bypass the gpgsm and run gpgsm directly" you mean using gpgsm in server mode? Or what do you mean with "bypass gpgsm and run gpgsm" (which seems contradictory).
